Role Description

The Operations Engineer is responsible for Orchestrate’s infrastructure. The day-to-day life of this role will not be routine. An Operations Engineer is responsible for creating and executing the strategy for deploying and maintaining infrastructure while balancing capital efficiency and performance. Furthermore, the role be will be responsible for creating monitoring and reporting infrastructure that 1) ensures there is no service downtime, and 2) provides data and feedback for ongoing optimization.


  • Expert Unix, Linux, Solaris System Administration
  • Experience with Hadoop (Zookeeper, HDFS) administration in large-scale, production environments
  • Experience with configuration management tooling (Puppet, Chef, Salt, etc)
  • Experience with JVM optimization for Java applications
  • Experience with modern system monitoring and reporting (e.g.: Graphite, statsd, Nagios)
  • Familiarity with cloud abstraction libraries (e.g.: jCloud, libcloud, etc)


  • Experience running realtime, distributed systems in large scale production environments
  • Familiar with functional programming concepts (Erlang, Clojure, Scala, Haskell)
  • Experienced running HBase in production
  • Fluent in Python and Ruby


The company is headquartered in Portland, Oregon. The role is offered as local or remote. Relocation is an option.
