Tipbit is a startup based in Seattle and San Francisco looking at vast amounts of information from a variety of sources and across a variety of end-user devices.

We are seeking to hire a search engineer to lead development of our cloud-based search platform. The right person will be an expert in search and machine learning, or linguistic analysis.

You would be responsible for engineering our search platform, working with an energetic, focused team spanning multiple client platforms and large scale backend systems.

We use a wide variety of open-source projects and we contribute back to them as we work – you would do the same.

Responsibilities extend to our ingestion and analysis services, search engine, and machine-learning systems. This suite is distributed across a cluster for performance and availability, and you would be responsible for maintaining those properties.

In addition, you’d be responsible for:

  • Designing a system for learning, feedback and tuning based on user behavior.
  • Understanding user behavior metrics.
  • Metadata-aware search in a distributed cluster.
  • Appropriate use of open-source technologies.
  • Future work on multi-lingual indexing and search.

Technical Skills

  • Experience with search or linguistic analysis required.
  • ElasticSearch, Solr, Lucene, or similar knowledge would be a strong plus.
  • Experience with distributed computing and storage required.
  • Experience with machine learning / data mining is a strong plus.
  • Computational linguistics, semantic analysis, or similar natural language background would be helpful.
  • Java expertise required.
  • Experience with other languages would help. We use Erlang and Python today, and those or other functional languages (Haskell, OCaml, etc) would be valuable.

  • San Francisco Bay area or Seattle area preferred.

  • Open to other locations for great candidates. Several folks work from home today.
