Medical Education Institute, Inc., a Madison, Wisconsin-based non-profit, is looking for a talented, creative, self-motivated, resourceful web developer to assist us in developing and maintaining our many websites. The right candidate will be detail oriented, well-versed in web technologies, and possess a passion for good web experiences. Strong verbal and written communication skills, creative thinking, ability to self-manage, ownership, and the ability to think "outside the box" are characteristics highly valued by the MEI team.

At MEI, you'll be creating, maintaining, and re-imagining websites that help improve and extend the lives of those with chronic kidney disease. We enjoy our work and have fun around the office with lighthearted and occasionally witty banter. You should enjoy self-direction and assuming responsibility for projects.

This is a full-time, mid-level position. Both local and remote candidates from within the US will be considered.

Job Responsibilities:


  • Build and maintain database-driven and static websites
  • Apply UX principles to help clarify and organize information and interfaces

Also, but significantly:

  • Maintain and update legacy code
  • Provide documentation and support for projects
  • Present reports on site analytics
  • Manage email lists and newsletters
  • Network management and basic IT support
  • Manage and create videos for YouTube
  • Take pride in our work, our products, and our team
  • Have ideas and advocate for them within the team
  • Communicate effectively, including translating technical information for clear understanding by all members of the team
  • Assist others with their jobs as needed, even if and when it doesn't necessarily fall into the job description

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency with Ruby and Rails
  • Understanding of modern techniques in HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Experience with modern web development workflows: GitHub pull requests, continuous integration, deployment
  • Understanding of Google Analytics
  • Ability to edit and optimize graphics for the web

Candidates should have or be willing to gain experience in:

  • PostgreSQL
  • Mac OS X, Mac computers
  • Linux administration and configuration
  • Apple network administration
  • Apple OS X Server administration
  • MailChimp
  • New technologies or techniques you feel could help accomplish our goals

Preference will be given to candidates providing a link to a GitHub repository of their work, or who can provide a code sample in an alternate fashion.
