KoBoToolbox Project at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative

KoBoToolbox, developed by the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, is an open source suite of tools for data collection and analysis in humanitarian emergencies and other challenging environments. HHI’s mission is to relieve human suffering in war and disaster by advancing the science and practice of humanitarian response worldwide.

As a result of the strong demand by the humanitarian community for our tools and expertise, we are currently expanding our team. We are urgently seeking a Web Application Engineer to implement a significant new phase of our KoBo software suite that is implemented in coordination with the United Nations and the International Rescue Committee. As a core member of our technical staff, the individual will have a senior role to implement an exciting new software infrastructure under a tight development schedule. The Web Application Engineer is responsible for building applications that exhibit superior reliability, robustness, and performance. The individual will be part of a small, dynamic, and highly motivated team tasked with design, implementation, quality assurance, and user acceptance testing in a continuous integration process.

This is a hands-on development role, and requires the implementation of a system using Python/Django, HTML5, JavaScript, and other technologies. A successful candidate will possess a broad knowledge of web application development technology. This individual will thrive in a collaborative and team-oriented environment, and have a desire to acquire and apply new skills.

Required Skills

  • 3 + years of professional software development
  • Strong experience in Python/Django
  • Development work in web applications
  • Strong experience with HTML5, XSLT, JSON, and CSS3
  • Experience with database design and administration
  • Experience with NoSQL databases (Mongo, Couch)
  • Proven track record for problem solving and delivering high-quality software
  • Significant experience with iterative and test-driven development practice

Additional Skills

  • Experience in Ajax JQuery and JavaScript
  • Experience with other JS libraries, such as bootstrap
  • Experience with GIT and open source development
  • Experience developing in a continuous integration environment using source code control, automated testing, and build automation
  • Experience with agile development practices
  • Experience working independently in multi-location teams
  • Experience with Android, JavaRosa, Xforms a plus
  • Experience and/or interest in working in humanitarian action, human rights, or economic development a plus


  • Design, code, and test user-interface and application components
  • Contribute to design and other documentation
  • Participate in design and code reviews for components produced by project teams
  • Demonstrate flexibility by acquiring new skills and taking on new tasks
  • Work effectively on project teams using agile development practices


This is a long-term full-time sub-contract, fees are commensurate with experience
