Hi. We’re looking for an awesome Senior Web Developer to join our growing team. If you’ve ever wanted to work for an interesting security startup with great people, this is your chance. We’re a little different than your average startup… so we put together this FAQ.

Q: First thing’s first.. Who are we? A: Safelight Security is made up of a diverse group of security and business professionals with expertise in the realms of security education, IT, product development, graphic design, higher learning, customer service and business development. Needless to say, we are proud of our strengths and bring to the table best practices from larger companies such as Symantec, Novell, and @stake. We came together to start a small business and grow it from the ground up—and it’s worked for us!

Q: What type of candidate are we looking for? A: If we could paint a picture of who we are looking for, it would be someone who…

  • Is a team player with excellent written and spoken English communication skills
  • Loves to learn and grow by experimenting with new technologies in order to find the optimal fit to solve a specific problem
  • Embraces the work hard/play hard mentality of a start-up environment

Q: What would I be working on? A: We are building a completely new experience for our customers that will change the way they roll out security education within their organization. You will be part of the team that works together with our customer advisory panel to shape this vision and deliver a hosted web service that meets the needs of our diverse set of customers.

Q: Where is this position located? A: This opportunity is ideally based in our Boston office. That said, remote locations would be up for discussion for the right candidate.

Q: Would would a typical day look like? A: Most days at Safelight are anything but typical. Any given day may see you hashing out product features with the Chief Architect and VP of Engineering, discussing interface design with our user experience specialist, listening to customer feedback to improve our product, learning about a new framework that will help create a world class solution, writing lots of code to bring your ideas to life and occasionally discussing your favorite comic book or TV show around the office coffee pot.

Q: Who will I be working with? A: As a Senior Web Developer with Safelight Security, you will work with the Safelight Engineering team as well as stakeholders from several customer organizations to bring to life a new product offering. Working with the Chief Architect and User Experience Specialist, you will have direct input into the design and development of this new platform. We’re a 15 person company, so needless to say you’ll know everyone on a first name basis…as well as the names of their significant others and pets!

Q: What hours do you work? A: We generally work “normal” office hours but are flexible. Most of us are in the Boston area so we typically follow an east coast time schedule. That said, we’re a startup, so sometimes there are long hours and late meetings. At the same time, we all have families, friends, and personal commitments, so we aim for a good work-life balance.

Q: What technology do you use? A: The team is currently considering Ruby as well as some Javascript APIs as the language of choice for this new product. However, we fully expect the senior web developer to have some opinions on the matter and bring some expertise that will definitely inform the technology decisions made for this project. All members of the team get a say in what we do and how we do it, that’s how we roll.

Q: What skills and qualities are you looking for in a candidate? A: We want someone who has experience in many web technologies and shows a tendency to reach for the right tool for the job rather than a slavish devotion to one language. We’d expect this person to have good development habits around proper use of source control, ability to write good documentation, willingness to review other people’s code and have them review yours, and some secure coding best practices would be nice but we’ve got a lot of security folk to help you pick up on those quickly. Most important to us is a team player who is willing to listen and learn, bring good ideas to the table with passion and drive and who cares about the quality of work they produce.

Q: What benefits do you offer? A: The salary is competitive and depends on your experience. We offer the following:

  • Health benefits
  • 401k match
  • Disability: Long Term & Short Term
  • Dental
  • Paid time off
  • Holidays
  • Many more…
