Software Development

2015-09-24 20:23

Who we are looking for

We’re looking for a software developer who has experience in developing web applications. The application stack is built in Ruby, using Rails, and Javascript of course. This means that previous Ruby skills are a distinct advantage, but they're not essential if you're a bright, experienced developer. We encourage all development to be test-driven, and have regular code reviews and use automated code quality metrics.

We’re big fans of automation, so any experience of that sort of automated software or infrastructure deployment would be of use. Although this is primarily a Ruby development role, you’ll need to be competent in Javascript; any experience of frameworks like React.js is a bonus. You’ll be comfortable working with the command-line on Unix-like systems.

We make extensive use of cloud services, particularly Heroku and AWS, so familiarity with that would be a bonus, although we'll get you up to speed quickly if not.

We like to be up to date, so you will be learning new skills and technologies often.

Ideally we’d like to see examples of web applications on which you’ve worked, and links to Github repositories are most welcome.

We pride ourselves on working closely with customers, in iterations, so you will be part of a small but very focussed team from day one.

Our customers are mainly in the healthcare, pharmaceutical and consumer goods industries, so you'll be working in some of the most interesting and fastest-moving industries that there are.

What you would have done this month

  • Written code! Ruby, Javascript and more
  • Developed integration and unit tests, and added them to our test suite
  • Worked on two sprints, including planning and reviewing
  • Presented the latest iteration of the application to the product owner
  • Worked with our in-house scientists to get their advice
  • Read lots of Ruby and software-related blogs, watched podcasts and videos to keep up with the latest developments in the field
  • Coached our bioinformatics consultants on the latest techniques in software development

What you may do in future

  • Engage with outside experts (e.g. UI designers, security consultants) to further improve the product
  • Attend training courses or conferences for your technical and professional development
  • Visit customer sites to discuss requirements, present our software, and gather feedback

Eagle Genomics provides a competitive salary based on experience and exceptional employee benefits

  • 25 days holiday (rising to 28 after three years)
  • Private medical insurance and health cash plan
  • Life cover insurance
  • Childcare vouchers
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Group Personal Pension scheme contribution
  • Employee share option scheme

While this is potentially a fully remote position, we'd want you to spend a week or two in the office initially so that we can all get to know each other face to face. After that, if you can visit occasionally, so much the better.

Please note that we do not work with recruitment agencies.
