Our customers, experience and research tell us that readily available, useful cookbooks have a large impact on our customers’ success with Chef. Useful cookbooks help our customers:

  • improve their ability to make good decisions
  • get their work done more quickly
  • enhance their effectiveness on the job.

As the part of the Chef Community Engineering team, you will have significant impact to the future of Chef. Many of our commercial customers begin their Chef journey as an individual downloading the open source version of Chef. A single, delightful community experience continues to be a top reason why customers use Chef year-after-year.

This is where you come in as a Software Development Engineer focused on developing delightful cookbooks. You will focus on delivering the following outcomes.

  • Increased velocity of releases for CHEF-managed cookbooks on the Supermarket
  • Improved ability for community members to find and write awesome cookbooks
  • Decreased time required for customers to automate key production system

You will be interacting with the entire company as well as our partners, customers, and the community at large so communication plays an important part of your day-to-day. Because you have such a public role, you need to be a master at conflict resolution and engage in and enjoy crisis management. Your audience is very, very, diverse. You must be a clear thinker and effective speaker who is good at influencing others.

Just like any open source community, our team at Chef is distributed across regions and we live and communicate in a vibrant world of text / video chat and peer review.

So, what’s in for you? Aside from working with a world class team and managing one of the most exciting open source projects in technology, you will be integral to shaping our open source strategy, growing our community, and driving the success of our commercial business.

Here’s what we are looking for:

  • Experience working as a maintainer for one or more open source projects
  • Experience with Chef
  • Experience writing and sharing Chef Cookbooks
  • Experience managing Linux and/or Windows systems in a production environment
  • Existing involvement in the Chef community
  • Experience in training others in complex tasks and skills
  • Willingness to travel

Experience that will get you bonus points:

  • Working in an environment practicing continuous delivery
  • Building and deploying highly available systems
  • Building and deploying multi-datacenter federated systems

Awesomeness trumps all other requirements.
