We are looking for a Senior Support Engineer to join our Development Team and lead support of the Digital Shadows platform in the US. The ideal candidate will be based in San Francisco, though we can support remote working covering 9am to 6pm PST for the right person.

Digital Shadows provides cyber situational awareness services to high profile organizations. We're an award winning start-up and since being founded in the United Kingdom in 2011, we haven't stopped growing. We've got ambitious plans for 2015 and beyond and are seeking exceptional individuals to join us on our journey as we grow our operations in the US and the UK.

Our innovative software platform covers over 100 million sources of data in more than 26 languages - everything from Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn to content hosted on the Tor network, IRC channels, and insecure home devices. We de-duplicate, enrich, and analyze this data in near real time to produce a rich set of intelligence that is delivered through our market leading portal.

All areas of the platform are expanding in capability and complexity as the company grows. Our expanding client base, both in the UK and the US, means our technical support requirements are increasing. We are looking for an experienced Support Engineer and Java Developer to join our Development Team. You will be a key member of the team, primarily responsible for leading technical support of the Digital Shadows platform in the US by diagnosing and resolving technical issues with the platform behind the scenes, as well as interacting with clients and serving as a public face for our company, as necessary. You will have the opportunity to refine and extend our support processes and frameworks while helping to shape the future of Digital Shadows’ technical support capability. In your Java Developer role, you will address bugs in our platform and develop new features and enhancements with the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the software development lifecycle.

Job Role and Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and resolve customer issues
  • Document and report issue resolution progress and success internally and externally
  • Continually increase the quality of the application through bug fixing other improvements
  • Write well structured, testable, efficient code
  • Work with and integrate external tools, libraries, data sources, and APIs
  • Discover, evaluate, and implement new technologies
  • Contribute in all phases of the software development lifecycle
  • Collaborate across teams to define, design, and ship new features


  • 3+ years of technical support or third line support experience
  • 3+ years of commercial software design and development experience
  • 2+ years of experience in Java development
  • Exceptional problem solving skills
  • Good knowledge of relational databases and SQL (ideally, MySQL or PostgreSQL)
  • Familiarity with the Linux operating system
  • Experience using a range of open source Java libraries and frameworks (ideally including Spring Framework, Hibernate, Apache Camel, or Apache Tapestry)
  • Ability to rapidly pick up new concepts, tools, and technologies
  • Familiarity with software development methodology, tools and release processes
  • Passion for best design and coding practices and a desire to develop innovative new ideas
  • Ability to articulate complex designs and ideas to both technical


  • Experience working with cloud services such as AWS or GCE
  • Knowledge of NoSQL databases, particularly MongoDB
  • Experience of front end web application development (ideally including AngularJS or JQuery)


  • Remuneration will be competitive, and negotiable on experience.
