System Administration

2015-04-03 21:25

Join a team of stellar designers and developers and work on a popular web application that powers some of the coolest businesses in the world.

We are looking for a seasoned person to help us scale and manage our systems for the future as part of a small team. This isn't an entry level position, the ideal candidate will have 5 or more years experience in a role such as Web Operations, Linux Systems Administration, Systems Development, a DevOps-style engineering team, etc.

The Harvest Systems Operations Team (currently two people) has the task of keeping all of our applications online and running smoothly, often under pressure. This is not your average assembly line role, you will have wide ranging responsibilities and lots of leeway to have fun in the process.

Harvest is a distributed team. We have a lovely big office in New York City you could work out of, but team members live all over the USA, Canada and Europe. Wherever you currently live, that's where we want you to be. In fact, if you are in a timezone significantly different from US Eastern Standard Time, that could be an advantage.

Did we mention a sense of humor yet? It's important, we like to have fun while we work.

HARVEST is a fun place to work, and we offer (at least) the following things:

  • Competitive salary
  • 100% health and dental coverage
  • Flexible schedule
  • Standing desk
  • Mac of your choice
  • The time and funds to attend conferences, or classes, to develop your career
  • Subscription to Fisherman's Weekly. Just kidding, seeing if you actually read these lists.

The Systems Team does the following things (and more):

  • Deploy and manage a growing set of dedicated servers, and cloud instances, in a few different facilities.
  • Design backup and redundancy strategies to keep our customers' data safe.
  • Understand changing product requirements, and deploy new tools to meet those requirements.
  • Develop monitoring systems so we know when things stop working. Respond if those monitoring systems ever generate alerts.
  • Track important metrics to inform our business decisions.
  • Help the development team be productive by building internal tools and collaborating on design decisions.
  • Interface with customers to troubleshoot issues. This isn't a dark dungeon role, you are an ambassador for Harvest.

If you know the following stuff, you've likely been doing the type of things we are looking for help with:

  • Designing modular systems platforms using Docker
  • Performance tuning rapidly growing web applications
  • Using Chef and Ansible to manage servers, and services
  • Deploying Ruby applications
  • Working with Amazon Web Services, and Rackspace Cloud
  • MySQL, specifically performance tuning and advanced replication strategies
  • Nginx
  • Graphite, StatsD, Sensu
  • Git
  • Redis
  • Advanced networking, IPv6, firewalls, intrusion detection
  • Datacenter operations concepts such as power, cooling, hardware deployment, etc.
  • Vendor relationship management
